First Impression

The Front Row's resident jazz aficionado, Eric Ladau, reports:

We are very excited to welcome saxophonist Dr. Woody Witt [pictured below, left] back to The Front Row this Wednesday, November 17 for a live performance. Woody is a professor of Music at Houston Community College Northwest and an affiliate artist at the Moores School of Music here at the University of Houston. With his fat juicy tone and adventurous musical spirit, Woody is carrying on the "Texas Tenor" tradition, much to the delight of today's jazz lovers.

Earlier this year, Woody was the recipient of the 2010 CME (Chamber Music America)/FACE (French American Cultural Exchange) French American Jazz Exchange Grant. The grant supports innovative collaborations between American and French jazz musicians, with performances and recordings taking place in France and the United States. For his musical partner, Woody has chosen French pianist and composer Franck Amsallem [pictured below, right]. The partnership has yielded impressive results thus far, including a headline performance at the 2010 Jazz Au Mercure Festival in Toulouse in March, as well as a CD release entitled First Impression on the Houston based Blue Bamboo Music Label.

Throughout November, the Woody Witt/Franck Amsallem Quartet will be playing and conducting jazz clinics at numerous locations around Houston and other Texas locations. The other half of the quartet will consist of two distinguished faculty members from the University of North Texas -- bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer / arranger Rich DeRosa.

The repertoire will combine music of the French Impressionists with swinging jazz arrangements, as well as original compositions. Just a few examples are:

- "Hommage to Ravel" by Moores School Professor Dr. Robert Nelson (based on Maurice Ravel's Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello)
- Francis Poulenc's "Rhapsodie Negre" arranged by saxophonist Mark Piszczek
- Claude Debussy's "Engulfed Cathedral" arranged by drummer Rich De Rosa
